FAQs:
Who is Extra Harvest Share?
We are your local gardener neighbors in Clairemont and Bay Park San Diego! We love to garden and share extra harvests with others. We love to grow fruits, veggies, and flowers and experiment with new plants and flavors. We like to see new gardeners start to grow their own food and are happy to answer any questions!
How does Extra Harvest Share work?
We receive extra fruits & veggies from neighbors and redistribute to other neighbors who want to eat healthy, local, homegrown produce. People with extra produce to share or who want an extra bag submit your info through our "Request Produce" or "Share Your Extras" pages. We coordinate with you to donate your extra items or to pick up a produce bag. Depending on seasonality and the extra produce items available, regular Extra Harvest Share exchanges are held every 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks.
How can I participate?
There are 2 ways to participate: 1) If you grow fruits and/or veggies and have extras to share, contact us and we can either pick up your extras or you can deliver them to the 92111 zip code; or 2) request a bag of homegrown produce by clicking on the "Place Order" tab!

What does "seasonal" fruits and veggies mean?
All fruits and veggies are not naturally available year-round. When a grocery store has a particular fruit or veggie in stock year round, that means that the item was grown under conditions that best suit it, and under the humidity and temperature requirements it has (i.e. in a greenhouse or grow house). Each fruit or veggie has a season in which it best grows. Local gardeners and farmers plant seeds that will flourish in a particular season and region, and therefore only the fruits or veggies that are meant to grow in particular conditions will be available each month.
In other words, you can't get tomatoes all year long- these are a Summer plant and typically are ready to harvest in June through August. You can't get asparagus, onion, and peas all year- these are traditionally Winter crops that flourish in cooler temperatures.
I want to start a garden! Do you have any tips?
Anyone can start a garden and in any space available! If you have yard space, consider a large pot (15-gallon), a raised bed, or a straw-bale garden. If you are in an apartment, consider an herb garden in the kitchen or sunny window. When planting outside, be sure to consider access to sunlight and seasonality when selecting what to plant. Any questions, email Nicole at extraharvestshare@gmail.com.
